TOOTH EXTRACTIONS IN WINTER PARK, FL

It's only natural to be concerned about visiting the dentist for a tooth extraction. You may be worried about the pain factor or the thought of being left with a gap. You might also be feeling anxious about the procedure itself.

As with the majority of dental procedures, thinking about what might happen is usually far worse than the actual treatment. Rest assured Dr (insert name here) and the team are very familiar with the extraction process. It's safe, quick, and almost always painless. The risks are virtually non-existent and in many cases, the procedure is an instant cure for chronic infection and tooth pain. If you do feel worried, then we can discuss your fears with you before we carry out any treatment. We can also dispel many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding tooth extraction. So if you are nervous, then we invite you to talk to us beforehand.

SO WHY ARE TEETH EXTRACTED?

Teeth are usually only extracted as a last resort. It could be because your tooth is severely decayed, or has advanced periodontal disease and is causing great pain. Alternatively it may be because it's poorly positioned in the mouth and undermining other healthy teeth. Whatever the reason our dentist will be happy to discuss it with you in detail.

SO HOW DOES THE FILLING PROCESS WORK

The first thing Dr (insert name here) will do is to numb the extraction area, including the gums, using a powerful local anesthetic. Before starting the extraction, the dentist will ask whether you have any sensation. The important thing to remember is that we pride ourselves on delivering pain-free dentistry and as a result, our dentist won't proceed with the extraction until he or she is sure the area is completely numb.

Using small extraction forceps or elevators, gentle but continued pressure is applied to the tooth in a rocking motion. This is done to enlarge the socket area sufficiently so that enough space is created in order for the tooth to lift out easily.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU FEEL DURING THE PROCESS?

Although you won't feel pain, you will feel pressure that's applied to the tooth as the dentist rocks it backwards and forwards. Once the tooth has been removed, the extraction site is cleaned up and you'll be asked to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes afterwards. This is important for the socket as it helps to form a blood clot. It also forms a natural barrier preventing bacteria from entering the area. Once the anesthetic wears off you may feel a dull ache. This is usually brought under control using over-the-counter medications and will subside after a day or two. However if pain or excessive bleeding continues, consult our office right away.

AFTER CARE

Post extraction you'll need to avoid strenuous activity for the next 24 hours and avoid brushing the socket area for around 72 hours. In some cases there may be signs of swelling. If so it can usually be brought under control with an ice-pack or even a pack of frozen peas. After 2 or 3 days you should be back to normal.
