Although there are less dentists nowadays that practice filling teeth with amalgam materials, they still have their advantages. Otherwise known as silver fillings they're relatively inexpensive compared to other materials such as gold and composite resin and are more durable than white fillings. With good care they will typically last 10-15 years.
It might surprise you to know that silver amalgam fillings aren't actually made entirely from silver. Instead they're made using a powdered alloy composed of tin, and copper as well as silver. This is combined with a liquid element (mercury) which collectively makes up a putty-like paste.
According to the FDA, (Food and Drug Administration) after repeated testing there is no evidence that links amalgam fillings with any adverse health effects and they are therefore considered safe in adults and children over 6 years of age. That said if you are concerned, it's always best to talk to your dentist first.
Amalgam fillings are mainly used to fill cavities or gaps in the teeth where bacteria can enter, although they can also be used to repair partially broken or chipped teeth. When the powder element is mixed with the liquid mercury the substance becomes fully malleable, making it quick and easy to use. Because of this, patient 'chair time' is reduced. For younger patients, or those with special needs who find it difficult staying still during dental treatment, amalgam fillings offer the ideal solution. Silver amalgam fillings are also the best choice for larger cavities located at the back of the mouth where greater bite force is needed.
Ultimately the best type of dental filling is no dental filling at all as prevention is better than cure. However, if you do have cavities and are in need of amalgam fillings, then you can rest assured that it's a proven and safe technique that's been used for well over 100 years.
